Chapter 38

‘There was someone else there,’ Lucy explained as she sat hunched a little in her armchair.

Garrow and French had arrived at Lucy’s home five minutes earlier and been let inside by the Family Liaison Officer – FLO – Constable Jenny Wilkes.

Garrow frowned as he pulled out his notebook and pen. ‘Can you tell us exactly what you can remember about Friday?’

Lucy blinked as she composed herself. ‘I do vaguely remember being at my mum’s house.’

‘Okay,’ French said encouragingly. ‘Do you remember arriving?’

‘No.’ Lucy shook her head immediately. ‘Everything is cloudy as if it was a dream.’ Then she looked at Garrow with a pained expression. ‘I’m sorry. I wish I could remember everything.’

‘It’s all right. Take your time.’ Garrow gave her a kind smile. ‘Anything you can remember, however small, is going to be incredibly useful in finding out who did this to your mum.’

Lucy nodded thoughtfully.

Garrow looked into the depths of her soft, brown eyes. Her eyebrows were dark and full, like a child’s, lending an aura of innocence to her features. Her cheeks were slightly rounded and symmetrical on either side of her elegant nose. There were gentle creases around her eyes.

Then Lucy frowned as if something had suddenly occurred to her. She looked at them. ‘There was someone else there. In the house.’

‘Do you know who?’ French asked.

Lucy’s eyes moved around the room as she searched her damaged memory. ‘Mum was fighting with someone in the kitchen. She had a knife in her hand. They were struggling.’

‘Do you mean that your mum had a knife?’ Garrow asked to clarify.

French frowned. ‘Can you see the person who was fighting with your mum?’

Lucy didn’t say anything for a moment. Then she furrowed a brow. ‘It was a man.’

Garrow looked at her. If she had remembered this correctly, it was a very significant step in finding out who had murdered Lynne. ‘Can you describe him?’

Lucy shook her head. ‘Sorry,’ she whispered, now overcome with the memories of that night. Her eyes filled with tears as she took a breath to compose herself.

Garrow leaned forward. ‘It’s okay,’ he said reassuringly. ‘Are you sure that you saw a man fighting with your mum?’

Lucy nodded but looked a little hesitant. ‘That’s what I can remember. I don’t know if that helps?’

‘It’s very helpful,’ Garrow reassured her.

As she turned, Garrow spotted two red scratch marks at the back of her neck.

They were clearly visible as she was wearing her hair in a ponytail.

French looked over at Garrow – he’d clearly spotted them too.

‘You’ve got two scratch marks at the back of your neck, Lucy,’ French observed. ‘Any idea how you got them?’

Lucy put her hand to the back of her neck. ‘These? No, sorry. They were there when I woke up in hospital.’
